Torsion Springs or Extension Springs

Garage doors are installed with either torsion springs or extension springs.  Most of the newer homes today have torsion springs installed.  Even though there are probably more extension springs in existing older homes, the most safe and durable choice is the torsion spring.  These springs are under extreme tension and should not be repaired by anyone that doesn’t have experience in the garage door industry.  Many (DIY) do-it-yourself handymen and homeowners have been seriously injured attempting to replace or repair torsion springs.  You have to have dedicated winding bars as well as several pair of vise-grips, along with the knowledge of tension revelutions per door height.  Again this should be left to the pros!  If you have never replaced a pair of torsion springs, I don’t recommend attempting this repair.

We always replace both torsion springs on a 2 spring application.  Since both springs have had the same amount of revolutions and life cycle, it only makes sense to address the whole problem, not just half.  If you have anymore questions replacing torsion springs I will be creating a,” How to install torsion springs” blog in the future.  It’s basically gonna describe the whole job step by step.  However I am still not giving anyone the idea that they should try this alone.  Most garage door companies wont even sell the springs to a home owner because of the serious injuries involved.
